Sports Dentistry for Today's Athlete: A Modern Approach to Injury Prevention and Management
This course provides a comprehensive overview of sports dentistry and dental traumatology, emphasizing the prevention, recognition, and management of orofacial injuries in athletes. Participants will explore current injury statistics, review evidence-based approaches for treating dental trauma, and examine the critical role of sports mouthguards in reducing risk. Real-world case studies will illustrate clinical decision-making, and emerging technologies such as 3D-printed and smart mouthguards will be discussed. The session equips healthcare professionals with the confidence and skills to better manage dental emergencies in both competitive and recreational athletic settings.

Eric G. Jackson, DDS, MAGD, FICOI, FASD, FICD, FADI, FPFA, FACD is a comprehensive general dentist and nationally recognized leader in sports dentistry. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry, he earned multiple advanced fellowships and masterships, including the Academy of General Dentistry’s prestigious MAGD distinction.
Dr. Jackson has held leadership roles within the Academy for Sports Dentistry, serving as Vice President, President, and Immediate Past President from 2020–2023. From 2013–2021, he was the official team dentist for the Chicago Bandits professional fastpitch softball team, contributing to two championship seasons. Since 2022, he has represented Chicago in the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee Volunteer Dental Program, providing comprehensive care to Team USA athletes out of his dental practice in Downers Grove, Illinois.
An accomplished speaker and educator, Dr. Jackson has lectured at the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting, North Central College, and nationally on dental trauma management, custom athletic mouthguards, and the critical role of dentists in athlete healthcare. He has authored cover stories for AGD Impact, contributed to The Daily Grind, and serves as a manuscript editor for General Dentistry. His sports dentistry work bridges clinical practice, athlete safety, and education, making him a trusted voice in the field.
